Carlisle G.C.

Medal Format.

The lads traveled up to Carlisle expecting to get a soaking, but what a surprise when we got there, it was cloudy with sunny spells and we had a couple of showers so we were very lucky.

But there was no luck in Gordon Hines play he went round in a very creditable gross score of 83 and he reckons it could have been better, when he came in he commented, “ I like to play fast and ever since I started playing  Workington with Mckenzie and Seeds (they play speed golf by the way) , I like to play quick and today I was playing with some lads (no disrespect to them but I’ll name them anyway, Bobby Batey, Malcolm Crossfield & Eddie Garner) who were not quite up to my pace and they held me back a bit, but I’m happy I’ve won and can’t wait for the captains day at Hexham”.

1st: G Hine           Gross 83               H/Cap 7.5            Nett 75                 New H/Cap 5.5

2nd: G Garrett     Gross 89               H/Cap 13.3          Nett 76                 New H/Cap 12.3

Eden Golf Club

Stableford Format.

This was the worst turn out of the season, only ten turning out for this stableford competition.

Malcolm ‘The mighty Atom’ Crossfield came out on top with a creditable 35pts, with Paul Haskins coming second with 32pts.

Malcolm commented “Edens a long and boring course and you need to be a big hitter, so it suited me down to the ground, a lot of the lads struggled out there today but this is my kind of course. I watched a bit of the senior open on SKY yesterday and I noticed Corey Pavin doesn’t half look like me, but he can’t hit it as far!”

1st: Malcolm Crossfield 35pts         New H/Cap     15.2

2nd: Paul Haskins      32pts.  New H/Cap     14.5

No Two’s today..

25th June 2010

Eskdale Golf Course.

Format Medal.

Sixteen members turned up at this picturesque little course at Eskdale, and the golf was a very low scoring day for some of them. Group three were really on song with Dick Cobban blitzing the first nine in 34 shots (1 under par), Chris Kelly & John Stewart with 36 shots on the first nine, so it's easy to see why the eventual winner came from this group.

Chris Kelly finished with the best gross of the day 75 playing handicap of 4 nett 71 and that was 5th place, Chris commented later "no matter how I tried Dick & John were too steady for me today, everything they hit went down the middle".

1st.      John Stewart              Gross 77.         Handicap 8.9. Nett. 68. New H/Cap 5.9

2nd Place was won on a card play-off, three players on 69, Dereck with a better back 6.

Appleby GC

Stableford format.

Not a bad turn out today, thirteen in all played this very forgiving but still tough little course. ‘Thirteen’ unlucky for some but not for ‘BIG BOOM BOOM BOB SUPERMAN McFARLANE’ a  great round Bob, scoring 17pts on the first nine, and blitzing the back nine with 20pts.

Bobs the first member to go round under par in this society for a long time, scoring a fantastic 37pts, Bob commented ‘ I was really disappointed with my game at Herons Reach where I was pretty confident that I would do well, and because I won the  last time we played there, I was also the winner at Bolton & Ripon in case you didn’t know, anyway I had to go out today and show this lot I can still compete with the best, once I sank that 40’ putt for a birdie two on the 10th there was no holding me back, just as Long John Daly says ‘Grip it and rip it’ and that’s just what I did, and yes I did model my swing on Long John, not Daly, Baldry’. Cliffy Bragg pushed Bob close with a very creditable 35pts but Bob was just a different class today.

1st: Big Bob McFarlane    37pts. New H/Cap 13

2nd: Cliffy Bragg                 35pts. New H/Cap 11.6

Two’s.

Bob McFarlane 164yd par 3 10th.

Billy Thompson 162yd par 3 17th.

The weather was sweltering and the golf was also hot, Jonathan Pattinson burning the course up with the best gross of the day, going round in 76 shots, 12 pars, 2 birdies, 2 bogeys & 2 double bogeys, a great round but not good enough to take the prize, in fact he finished 3rd, 1st prize went to his mate Gary ‘Bambi’ Burns, he went round in a gross 81 birdying all the par 5’s and 2nd prize went to his mate Chris'Paddy' Kelly who also went round in a gross 80, it was a close run thing with some really great golf played by these lads and they're all mates.

Stephen Kirkbride and Carl Kirkbride both finished with a nett score of 72, but unfortunately they hadn't played in enough of the local competitions to qualify to win the championship.

1st : Stephen Kirkbride.  Gross 96, H/Cap 24, Nett 72. Card play-off better back 6. New H/Cap 21

2nd : Carl Kirkbride,           Gross 93, H/Cap 21, Nett 72. New H/Cap 19

  1. Friday 30th April, Keswick GC, Medal Format.
Fantastic turn out today on this tough undulating hilly golf course, 24 players played and only one came out on top.
Mark Kirkbride blazed a trail here today taking just 40 shots on the first nine holes and he just held it together on the back nine with a 47, Mark commented " I played with Gary (Bambi) Burns and I was determined to stick with him shot for shot, he used to be my boss so I was determined to kick ass today!
Gary had 38 and I had 40 on the first nine and I knew it was just a matter of time before he cracked, but I nearly lost it on the 13th with quadruple bogey 8, but I managed get my focus back on the next hole by birdieing the 14th, that settled me down for rest of the round and a winning score". Dick Cobbon was second beating Gordon Hine on a card play-off with a better back six, both players finished with a nett 76.

  1. M Kikbride Gross 87. H/Cap 14. Nett 73. New H/Cap 12
  2. D Cobbon  Gross 84. H/Cap 7.7 Nett 76. New H/Cap 6.7
Bonanza Hole. G Garret on the 3rd 154yd par 3.

Singles competion this year is MATCH PLAY!!!

Maryport GC Friday 9th April 2010
Stableford.
22 Turned up.
Conditions were good today with a stiff breeze blowing from the south which made the last 5 holes tough.
Alf Williams with a fantastic 36pts, scoring 16pts on the first 9 and 20pts on the back 9, won here today, I mentioned the last 5 holes being tough but Alf made mince meat out them scoring a incredible 12pts with a magnificent par on the 15th which is the toughest hole on the course. Alf said "those holes suited my game, with the wind in my face, I like to keep the ball low and under the wind so it suited my game, after I parred the 15th (a 4 pointer by the way superb) the charge was on and there was no stopping me, the next 4 holes were pretty bog standard, bring on Herons Reach I'm peaking at just the right time".

1st. A Williams 36pts new H/Cap 19
2nd C Kelly       32pts new H/Cap 5.5

1 card disqualified, incorrect score.
Two's.
Bonanza hole (5th) M Crossfield.
Other 2's (11th) J Richardson.

Seascale Friday 5th March 2010. (Medal).

A very nice day here on the links at seascale, and there was some very nice golf played also to compliment the day.
Stephen Seeds came out tops with a fantastic score, a gross 78 nett 73, Chris 'Bully Boy' Brannon was 2nd with a gross 89 nett 75.
Chris Kelly also had a very good knock but a 6 on the final hole cost Chris 2nd place, he finished with a gross 81 nett 76.
Seedsy says he wants to dedicate his first win of the season too his two new clubs, his R-9 driver and R-9 3 wood, without these clubs this victory wouldn't have been possible, I knew 'Bully Boy' had played well so I had to pull out all the stops, I thought I'd blown it carding two 7's on the 2nd and 16th which are two easy holes, but I managed 3 birdies to balance it out, and after knock like that I think I deserved the win!

1st. Stephen Seeds. Gross 78. Nett 73. New H/Cap 2.7.
2nd. Chris Brannon   Gross 89. Nett 75. New H/Cap 12.8

NO TWO'S

Next comp to be decided, our wonderful captain will email you with the next venue!
Silloth 5th Feb 2010

Good day for golf today, 12 members turned up for a Stableford competition.

When Jimmy 'Clicko' McClean delivered the cards and commented on Hargies round, saying 'he played out of his skin today' and 'he couldn't put a foot wrong' and after a bit of a crack, his last words were 'phone me with the result' and I wondered why.
Well it turned out they both had a good round because they both finished with 33pts, Clicko winning on a card play-off with a better back 9. Only one birdie two today and it was some two, Cliffy Bragg fired his second shot on the 1st straight in the hole, great shot Cliff.
And no I didn't phone Jimmy..

1st: J McClean 33 points
2nd:N Colquhoun 33 points

Two's. C Bragg on the 1st hole.

Next comp to be decided, Captain John will email all concerned.

Friday 11th December St Bees

Another good turn out, 16 members played at St Bees the lads played 3 clubs and a putter and it was MEDAL format.

It was a dry day but a very wet course, St Bees being a links course really suited the winner and second place because they both play on links courses, and these two know links golf, in 2nd place and member of St Bees it was Bobby Batey with a gross 97 nett 70 a good round Bobby but not quite good enough, in first place and stunning round of golf, it was Joe ' The Two' Green with gross 83 nett 65, Joe a member of Seascale said later on that "it was a good job it was wet other wise I was looking at going round in scratch today, and I'm hoping to keep this form going for the rest of the season so look out".
Chris Kelly managed too sink a 2 on the 16th, the bonanza prize wasn't won so that will roll over to the next competition. Captain John Stewart will email you all soon and let you know where we are playing next.

1st. Joe Green. Gross 83. Nett 65.  New Handicap 15.4.
2nd Bobby Batey. Gross 97. Nett 70.  New Handicap 25.5.

Chris Kelly. Birdie 2 on the 16th.

Friday 13th November Brampton

This was a MEDAL competition at BRAMPTON and there was another great turn out and the weather was SUPERB.
Nineteen in all turned up, and there was some very good scores, none better than Cliffy Bragg playing off 17 he came in with a gross 83 nett 66, Cliff did comment early on that it was playing short and would have relished more of a challenge, anyhow Cliff happy new handicap, theres one thing it will be a challenge playing off 12.
Eddie Gardner is the man in form, Eddie won at Ulverston and came 2nd today with gross 86 nett 69, eddie loses 4 shots today, that's 6 in total over two competitions.
Those clubs of Eddies must be something special, every time we stopped for a toilet break on the way back Eddie tooks his clubs with him, whats all that about?

Clicko gets a mention again, when we stopped for our first toilet break on the way back, Clicko thinking he's a bit of a athlete jumped off the bus and ended up in a swamp, what a laugh the mud went right over his chalky white ankles, he said ' Joan won't be happy, she spent all day yesterday polishing these shoes for me' and he to cap it all he was disqualified for signing a in completed score card, aye he had a good day!

Neal Underwood knocked a extra long putt in on the short par 3 14th, to claim the £12 prize.

1st. C Bragg        Gross 83 Nett 66. New Handicap 11.6, 5 shot reduction.
2nd E Garner       Gross 86 Nett 69. New Handicap 13,    4 shot reduction.
2 Non returns & a disqualified card.

Congratulations to Mark Kirkbride, he's just become a father for first time, his partner Claire gave birth to a baby boy 'Olly Ben' on the 12th November 7lbs 5ozs, hope mother and baby are doing OK Mark from all the boys in the society.
Marks wetting the baby's head in the club 1pm to 2pm Saturday 14th Nov anyone fancy a few drinks

First competition of the new season Stableford format.
16 turned out here today at a sun drenched Ulverston, and there was some competitive golf played by the in coming captain John Stewart and the new secretary Eddie Garner.
But on this occasion the spoils went to Eddie with 34 points, and John coming close with 32 points.
Jimmy 'Clicko' Mclean knocked in a 95 foot putt for a birdie 2 on the 10th hole to claim the bonanza prize of £48, when Clicko finished his round the putt was 25 foot, and few pints later and by the time the lads were getting off the bus it had grew to 95 foot, know what I mean???
One of his playing partners commented 'if it hadn't have hit the back of the cup, it would have ended up in the estuary'.
There were two other 2's both on the 5th hole by David 'Mac' Mckenzie and Bob 'Superman' Mcfarlane.
1st. E Garner 34 points. New H/Cap 17.
2nd. J Stewart 32 points New H/Cap 7.7.
A handicap list will be posted in the club.
£48 Bonanza prize. J Mclean.
